LEUCADIA WASTEWATER DISTRICT
August 15, 2012

SSCSC celebrated its 50th workshop at the Leucadia Wasteare District on August 15th, 2012.

This was a unique gathering that took collection workshops to the another level. Nearly 300 people participated in this event.

The day began with a review of SSCSC's history by Denis Pollak and Nick Arhontes. Carrie Mattingly, current president of CWEA spoke about CWEA and the opportunities available through the organization.

Mike Martin from Plumbers Depot delivered a talk on "Tools for Basic Collections Maintenance," followed by a talk on "Collection System Odor Control" by Robert Sharrer from Vapex Environmental Technologies.

The morning training session concluded with a highly charged game show lead by Duane Johnson and Dave Hill. Teams of three completed by answering challenging questions from Grade I and II level questions.

Mark Chamberlin and John Wrobel held an obstacle course challenge. Attendees had the opportunity to win a spot in the finals as they competed in connecting a vacuum tube to the combo, unrolling and then rolling up a fill hose and then finally, correctly identifying the colors used by the different utilities. A steady flow of contestants participated for over 3 hours of competition.

Haaker Equipment set up a CCTV obstacle course where attendees were challenged to come up with the fastest time as they steered a camera and crawler through a maze bordered by filled water glasses. Any spillt water was an automatic deduction from time from the final time score.

Both events had three finalist compete for the fastest times. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place tophies were awarded.

Each vendors was challenged to come up with a game where the attendees could compete for give-away tickets. This was very successful as participation was vigorous for 3 1/2 hours.

The afternoon sessions began with a class by  Joe Flores of the City of Victorville on "Report Writing." This was followed by a presentation by John Chadwell from EHS Environmental called "Active Shooter." Next was Kent Bricker from  Southland Water Technologies on "Selecting the Best Level Technology for Wet Well Measurement." The final class of the day was presented by Dave Ross from Sewer Lock on "Manhole Safety."

The committee would like to than Leucadia Wastewater District for hosting this workshop and for providing such a wonderful venue.

We would also like to thank the Young Professionals for helping out, especially on the obstacle courses.
